ZO® Chemical Peels: The Stimulator Peel, the 3-Step Peel, and How We Choose

Chemical peels are one of the oldest tools in medical aesthetics, and one of the most reliable when matched correctly to the skin. At Aetheria Aesthetics & Wellness™ in Pittsburgh’s North Hills we work with ZO® Skin Health peels at two depths, and the choice between them matters more than most patients expect. Here is a plain guide to both, from Melissa Kolowitz, PA-C.

What a chemical peel actually does

A peel is a professionally applied acid solution that exfoliates the outer layers of the skin in a controlled way. Dull, damaged surface cells lift away, and the skin responds by stepping up cell renewal and collagen production. The fresh skin that surfaces is more even in tone and smoother in texture.

The word peel makes people picture dramatic shedding. In practice, the depth of the formula decides everything: how much visible peeling you get, how much renewal happens underneath, and how much downtime you should plan for. That is why we carry two.

The Stimulator Peel: the no-downtime refresh

The Stimulator Peel blends lactic, glycolic, and citric acids into a gentle formula often called a lunchtime peel. There is little to no visible peeling afterward, just a brighter, fresher look, which is why patients book it before events or keep it on a steady every-two-to-four-week rhythm.

It is the right choice when the goal is glow and gentle maintenance: dullness, mild unevenness, and keeping a complexion at its best between deeper treatments.

The 3-Step Peel: the deeper renewal

The 3-Step Peel combines retinol, salicylic acid, and TCA, which lets it work meaningfully deeper. Light peeling or flaking typically begins two to three days after treatment and settles within about five days, and the renewal builds over the following one to two weeks. It also includes an at-home component that continues the work between visits.

This is the peel we reach for when there is something specific to treat: sun damage and discoloration, breakout-prone skin, superficial post-acne marks, early fine lines, or rough, congested texture. During a corrective series it is spaced every four to six weeks, then maintained quarterly or as the skin calls for it.

How Melissa chooses the depth

The depth decision is a clinical one, not a menu pick. Melissa looks at what the concern actually is, how your skin has handled actives like retinoids before, your skin tone and history, and honestly, your calendar. A bride three weeks out and a teacher in July are different cases even with identical skin.

Just as important is what surrounds the peel. Skin that is prepared with the right at-home regimen before a deeper peel, and supported with the right products afterward, gets noticeably more from the same treatment. That is why peels at Aetheria are planned inside a ZO Skin Health routine rather than as one-off events. Individual results vary.

Peels vs microneedling

The two renew skin through different routes. A peel works chemically from the surface down, lifting away damaged outer layers, which makes it excellent for tone, discoloration, and surface texture. Microneedling works mechanically from within, prompting new collagen, which makes it the better tool for scarring and firmness.

Neither replaces the other, and many patients benefit from both in sequence. At consultation Melissa lays out the right starting point for your skin rather than a set menu.

Frequently asked questions

How much will my skin peel? The Stimulator Peel produces little to no visible peeling. The 3-Step Peel brings light flaking from around day two that lasts up to about five days.

Does it hurt? The Stimulator Peel is comfortable for nearly everyone. The 3-Step Peel can tingle or feel warm during application, and that settles quickly.

How often should I get one? Every two to four weeks for the Stimulator Peel, every four to six weeks for the 3-Step during a corrective series, then quarterly maintenance. Individual results vary.
