The Restylane® Collection: Which Filler Fits Which Area

Restylane® is the dermal filler line we reach for most often at Aetheria Aesthetics & Wellness™ in Pittsburgh’s North Hills, and that is a deliberate choice. It is not one product but a family of hyaluronic acid fillers, each engineered for a different job, which means we can match the right gel to each part of the face rather than using one filler everywhere. Several of them use a flexible gel that moves with your expressions, and like all hyaluronic acid, they can be dissolved if an adjustment is ever needed. Choosing well is most of what makes a filler result look natural. Here is a plain guide to the five Restylane® fillers we stock, from Melissa Kolowitz, PA-C.

What Restylane® is

Restylane® is a collection of hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a substance your body already makes, which is part of why HA fillers integrate naturally and why they can be dissolved if needed. Several Restylane® products use a flexible gel technology designed to move with your expressions, so the result holds when your face is still and stays natural when it moves.

The reason there are several products is that lips, cheeks, folds, and jawlines each need a different gel. A soft, flexible filler is right for lips. A firm, supportive one is right for cheek lift. Using the wrong one in the wrong place is how results end up looking off, which is why matching the product to the area matters as much as the dose.

The five Restylane® fillers we use

Restylane® Kysse is made for lips. It is formulated to add definition and soft volume while keeping natural lip movement, and it is a common choice for softening the fine lines just above the lip.

Restylane®-L is a versatile hyaluronic acid filler that includes lidocaine for comfort. It is well suited to lips and to moderate folds such as the nasolabial lines that run from the nose to the mouth.

Restylane® Defyne is a flexible gel built for deeper laugh lines and nasolabial folds, and it is also used for chin definition. Its stretch-and-recoil character lets it support deeper areas while still moving with your expressions.

Restylane® Contour is designed for cheek and midface contouring. It adds flexible support that holds its shape when you are still and moves naturally when you smile or speak.

Restylane® Lyft is the firmest gel in the group. It is used for cheek volume, midface lift, and deeper folds, and it is also used to add volume to the backs of the hands.

How we choose

The first thing Melissa looks for is where the volume actually went, which is not always where you feel the problem. A deep nasolabial fold is a good example. It is often less about the fold itself and more about a cheek that has lost its support and started to descend, which drags the tissue down and deepens the crease. Support the cheek, and the fold softens on its own, without packing filler directly into the line where it can look heavy. Reading a face that way, structure first, is most of what separates a natural result from an overfilled one.

From there she matches the gel to the area. Lips usually call for Kysse or Restylane®-L. Flattened cheeks or a heavier midface point toward Contour or Lyft. Deeper folds and chin work often suit Defyne. Many plans use more than one product, because a balanced face rarely calls for the same filler everywhere.

We dose conservatively. Adding measured volume and building at a follow-up, rather than overfilling in a single visit, is what keeps a filler result looking like you. Filler can be dissolved if it ever needs adjusting, but starting measured means we rarely have to. You can always add a little more. Individual results vary.

Restylane® vs RHA®

The RHA® collection is also available at Aetheria, and both are well-made hyaluronic acid lines. Restylane® is our primary line because the breadth of the collection lets us match a specific gel to each area, and the flexible-gel options move naturally in expression. We reach for RHA® when its resilient profile suits a particular dynamic area. The fuller side-by-side comparison, and how the decision gets made, lives on our dermal fillers page.

Safety and reversibility

Hyaluronic acid fillers have a strong safety record when placed by a trained clinician, and one of their advantages is that they can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if an adjustment is ever needed. The most common effects are temporary swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site, which settle over a few days. We review your history at consultation to confirm filler is appropriate for you.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Restylane® last? It depends on the product and area. Lip filler tends to last around six months to a year, while firmer fillers in the cheeks or jawline can last a year or more. Individual results vary.

Does it hurt? Several Restylane® products include lidocaine, and we use a numbing step. Most patients describe brief pinches.

Can it be undone? Yes. As a hyaluronic acid filler, it can be dissolved if you ever want an adjustment.
